Trusted Land Clearing Services in Garland, NC

Headquartered on Peter Cromartie Road just outside town, South River Land Services clears, digs and grades land along US-701, NC-411 and the South River for Garland homeowners, farms and builders across southern Sampson County.

Garland, NC Land Clearing & Excavation Services

Garland started out as Sloan’s Crossing, the spot where the old sand roads from Roseboro, Ingold, Lisbon and White Lake met. A century later it is still a crossroads: US-701 runs straight down Ingold Avenue and meets NC-411 in town. Around that small downtown is some of the most productive farmland in the state. Pine flatwoods, blueberry fields and hog and poultry operations stretch out toward the South River on the west and the Black River and Great Coharie Creek on the east.

Wide rural tract cleared and rough graded, with a tree line behind it

That landscape is why land clearing services in Garland look different than they do in a subdivision town. Most of our Garland work is on rural tracts: opening up a wooded lot off NC-411 for a new home, clearing fence lines and pasture for a farm expansion, cutting a driveway and building pad on sandy ground, or digging a pond on a family property. The ground swings from dry Cainhoy sand to wet Leon and Lynn Haven sands within the same tract, so reading the land before the first tree comes down matters.

Garland isn’t a market we drive in for. It’s home. South River Land Services runs out of Peter Cromartie Road, a few minutes south of downtown off US-701, so a Garland job usually means our equipment is on site the same morning. Owner Dillon Evans has been clearing, excavating and grading land for Garland-area property owners since the company started in 2023, and he oversees every job himself.

Our Services in Garland, NC

Every service on our menu is available in Garland, and because we’re headquartered here, Garland jobs get the shortest drive time in our whole service area. Whether you’re on a farm tract off Ebenezer Forest Road or a lot near downtown, here’s what we bring.

Land Clearing Contractors in Garland, NC

Wheeled excavator working in a pine forest clearing

From wooded home sites along NC-411 to overgrown pasture that hasn’t been worked in years, we clear Garland land with track hoes, skid steers and dozers. That’s traditional equipment, not a mulcher, so stumps and roots come out and the ground is ready to build on or plant. A lot of our Garland clearing is agricultural: reclaiming fields, widening fence lines and opening up ground for expansions in a county that leads North Carolina in farm sales. Whether it’s lot clearing services for a single home site or several acres of farm ground, we handle the debris too, whether that means hauling it off, piling it, or leaving it as firewood.

Services include:

  • Residential Lot Clearing
  • Commercial Land Clearing
  • Agricultural Clearing
  • Selective Clearing
  • Complete Clearing
  • Brush and Undergrowth Removal

Excavating Contractors in Garland, NC

Backhoe digging into a sandy excavation

Garland’s high water table changes how you dig. On Leon and Lynn Haven sands near the South River, a foundation or utility trench can hit water a lot sooner than people expect, and a farm pond can fill on its own. As a local excavation company, we excavate for foundations, utility trenches for water, sewer and electrical lines, drainage ditches and french drains, and farm and retention ponds across the Garland area. We size every job to the soil we actually find on site.

Services include:

  • Foundation Excavation
  • Utility Trenching
  • Pond Excavation
  • Drainage Systems
  • Basement Excavation
  • Site Excavation

Land Grading & Site Preparation in Garland, NC

Two excavators grading a site beside a drainage pond

After Florence and Matthew put water across southern Sampson County, Garland property owners know what poor drainage costs. We grade building pads, driveways and access roads so water moves away from what you’re building, not toward it. That matters on flat, sandy ground where a few inches of fall makes the difference. Barn pads, shop pads, farm roads and site preparation for house construction are some of our most common Garland jobs.

Services include:

  • Building Pad Grading
  • Drainage Grading
  • Driveway and Access Road Grading
  • Parking Area Grading
  • Finish Grading
  • Rough Grading
  • Slope Stabilization

Demolition Contractors in Garland, NC

Excavator demolishing an old house

Rural Garland properties collect old structures: tobacco barns, sheds, aging farmhouses and concrete pads from equipment long gone. We take them down with excavators fitted with demolition attachments, pull the foundations, break out the concrete and clear the site so it’s ready for what’s next. From home demolition to outbuildings, if a structure needs asbestos abatement, we’ll tell you up front, because that’s work we don’t do.

Services include:

  • Building Demolition
  • Foundation Removal
  • Concrete Demolition
  • Outbuilding Demolition
  • Interior Demolition
  • Selective Demolition

Debris Removal in Garland, NC

Excavator beside a pile of demolition and wood debris

Clearing, demolition and storms all leave a mess, and in Garland, storm season can leave a lot of it. We load and haul vegetation, construction debris, demolished material, concrete and asphalt from properties in and around town, using skid steers, track hoes and our own trucks. You can add it to any clearing or demolition job, or book storm debris cleanup on its own after a storm rolls up US-701.

Services include:

  • Land Clearing Debris
  • Demolition Debris
  • Construction Debris
  • Storm Debris
  • Property Cleanup
  • Concrete and Asphalt Removal

Tree Removal Service in Garland, NC

Stacked cut logs beside a wooded path after tree removal

Tall loblolly pines and big hardwoods near the house, a barn or a power line are a real risk in Garland’s storm season. We take trees down from the ground with track hoes and grapples, land them where they need to go, then handle stump grinding or dig the stumps out and haul everything off. Tree removal works as a stand-alone job or as the first step of a bigger clearing project.

Services include:

  • Large Tree Removal
  • Hazardous Tree Removal
  • Building Site Tree Removal
  • Access Route Clearing
  • Storm-Damaged Tree Removal
  • Stump Removal
  • Debris Removal

Retaining Wall Contractors in Garland, NC

Close-up of a concrete block retaining wall

Garland is mostly flat, so here retaining walls usually do drainage and erosion work, not hillside terracing. Typical retaining wall construction jobs are holding back a ditch bank, stabilizing ground near a pond or creek, or squaring off a raised building pad. We build with concrete block, natural stone, treated timbers or poured concrete, and back every wall with gravel and drainage pipe so it lasts on wet sandy soil.

Services include:

  • Erosion Control Walls
  • Landscaping Walls
  • Site Stabilization Walls
  • Drainage Walls
  • Property Line Walls

Local Expertise in Garland: We Know This Area

Garland sits between two rivers. The South River runs along the west side of town and forms the Sampson–Bladen line where US-701 crosses it. To the east, Great Coharie Creek and Six Runs Creek join to form the Black River, a blackwater river the state lists as Outstanding Resource Waters. In between is a mix of Carolina bays, pocosins, pine flatwoods and farmland. The soil underneath changes fast: dry Cainhoy and Autryville sands on the ridges, and wet Leon, Lynn Haven and Pamlico muck in the low spots. We plan clearing, pad height and drainage around which one we’re standing on.

We’re on these roads every day. From the shop on Peter Cromartie Road, US-701 takes us into downtown Garland on Ingold Avenue, north to Clinton, or south across the South River toward White Lake and Elizabethtown. NC-411 runs us out to Harrells and up to Roseboro, and NC-903 heads toward the Great Coharie and Lisbon Bridge Road. Ingold, Parkersburg, Clear Run and Tomahawk are all within about 15 minutes, so Garland-area jobs never wait on a long haul.

Most Garland projects tie back to the land itself. We clear ground for new homes on family acreage off NC-411 and Johnson Road. We open up and level fields for farms in a county that leads North Carolina in hogs, turkeys and sweet potatoes. We dig ponds, cut farm roads and build barn pads, and we tear down old tobacco barns and outbuildings so the land can be used again. In town, around Curtis D. Cain Memorial Park and the blocks off South Church Avenue, the work is smaller: tree removal, lot clearing and drainage fixes.

Garland also knows high water. Florence in 2018 flooded Garland, Ingold, Clear Run and Ivanhoe, and after Matthew in 2016 US-701 near town was underwater. We keep that in mind on every job. That means grading so water moves off a site, staying out of floodplain and wetland edges along the South and Black rivers, and knowing when a project crosses North Carolina’s one-acre line for an erosion and sedimentation control plan. Agricultural clearing usually falls under the farm exemption. Home sites go through Sampson County zoning, environmental health septic review and building permits. We’ll tell you where your project stands before work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions: Garland, NC

How much does land clearing cost in Garland, NC?

It depends on the acreage, how dense the trees and undergrowth are, what happens to the debris, and how wet the ground is. A dry sandy ridge off NC-411 clears faster than a low, wet flat near the South River. National averages run roughly $1,400 to $6,200 per acre, but we won’t guess at your price from a phone call. We walk your Garland property, then give you a detailed estimate based on what’s actually there. Our blog post on winter land clearing costs in NC covers more on pricing.

Do you offer free estimates in Garland?

No. We charge for estimates, and we’re upfront about why. A real estimate means coming out to your Garland property, checking equipment access, soil and drainage, and working out what the job will actually take. That gives you a number you can plan around instead of a quote that changes once we’re in the ground. Since we’re based just outside town, scheduling a Garland site visit is usually quick.

How much does tree removal cost in Garland?

Tree removal cost depends on the size of the tree, how close it is to your house, barn or lines, and whether you want the stump ground or dug out and the wood hauled away. We work from the ground with track hoes and grapples, which is often efficient on open rural lots around Garland. Once we see the trees, we’ll give you a clear price for the whole job: removal, stumps and cleanup.

Can you clear land near the South River or Black River outside Garland?

Yes, with care. Ground near the South River, the Black River and Great Coharie Creek often includes wetlands, floodplain soils and swamp edges, and the Black River is classified as Outstanding Resource Waters. We plan the clearing to stay out of areas that shouldn’t be disturbed, control runoff, and flag anything that may need a wetland determination before work starts. On riverside tracts we’ll usually recommend selective clearing over clearing everything.

Do I need a permit to clear or grade land in Garland?

It depends on the project. In North Carolina, disturbing more than one acre generally requires an approved erosion and sedimentation control plan filed at least 30 days ahead, though agricultural work is usually exempt. Building a home also goes through zoning (the Town of Garland inside town limits, Sampson County Planning & Zoning outside them), a septic permit from Environmental Health, and a building permit. We’ll help you figure out which steps apply during the site visit.

Do you work in Ingold, Clear Run, Harrells and the rest of southern Sampson County?

Yes. Ingold, Parkersburg, Clear Run, Tomahawk and Harrells are all within about 15–20 minutes of our Garland shop, and we work them regularly along with Roseboro, Salemburg and Ivanhoe. We also cross the South River into Bladen County for White Lake and Elizabethtown, and run north to Clinton and Fayetteville. If you’re not sure your property is in range, call us.

Can you dig a farm pond on my property in Garland?

Yes, pond excavation is one of our core services. Around Garland the high water table helps many ponds fill and hold water, but sandy soil can also mean steep banks slough in if they aren’t shaped right. We look at the soil and drainage on your property first, then dig and shape the pond, banks and overflow to fit your land.

Do you offer forestry mulching in Garland?

No. We clear land with track hoes, skid steers and dozers instead of a mulcher. That removes stumps and roots instead of grinding everything down in place, which is usually what you want if you’re building, farming or grading the ground afterward. Our article on land clearing methods in NC explains the difference.
